| Good Deed That Deserved Another |
Emma Miller is 92 years young but she still vividly recalls the day 40 years ago when she was rushed by ambulance for cardiac treatment from Pittsburg Hospital to then recently opened John Muir Memorial Hospital. The electroshock therapy she received was the first such procedure to be performed at the modern new facility - a treatment that she's sure saved her life and the type of care that would later inspire the bequest of her home to John Muir Medical Center.
"I liked the idea of having a new hospital in Walnut Creek, but I never dreamed I'd be there," says Emma, who had passed the construction site every day on her way to work. She and her spouse of 70 years, Glenn, are both retired and now reside in Concord. "If it hadn't been for John Muir's good care, I wouldn't be here. I was so lucky. I'll never forget it."
Over the ensuing years, Emma returned to John Muir for treatment of various medical conditions, including stroke, hypertension, diabetes and, most recently, a broken hip and wrist. "I've been there so many times it's like a second home," she says with a chuckle. As for the Millers taking the step to name John Muir in their will, Emma simply says, "I'm very happy about it. It was the right thing to do."
Marvin A. Epstein, M.D., applauds the couple's generosity. He's the reputable cardiologist and John Muir co-founder who treated Emma that fateful day four decades ago and periodically thereafter. "I think it's a wonderful gesture," says Dr. Epstein. "I'm very grateful for the gift to the hospital." The Miller's gift is a remarkable testament to the care they receive that people remember the medical center in this way.
